Corn Day 2024

Corn Day 2024

With another terrific donation from Richard Johnson, volunteers from throughout the community gathered on Saturday, September 14th to husk, clean, blanche, remove kernels, and process newly harvested corn for the Community Dinner Table dinners and the Blackfoot Food Pantry.

Richard Johnson, owner of Grove City Gardens donated 5,000 ears of corn.  Over 150 youth and adults gathered early on Saturday morning to husk and clean the corn cobs.  The cobs were then taken to the Methodist church where over 80 volunteers were waiting to blanche the cobs, remove the kernels and then package the corn into plastic bags for freezing.

The so-called “day of the corn” has been taking place since 2013 when the Johnsons started making the corn donations, and the corn processing has become a yearly service opportunity for many of the participants ever since.

A special thanks goes to Richard for donating the corn, and to all the volunteers, both old and young, that show up to help with the processing.  Once the work is done the corn is frozen and then used throughout the year at many of the Tuesday night dinners.  Any remaining corn is given out at the food pantry.  A big thanks also goes to Randy Shiosaki, CDT board member, who oversees the corn processing effort.
